BBC News – Britishisms and the Britishisation of American English

BBC News – Britishisms and the Britishisation of American English.

Americans are the bane of language purists the world over who claim that the introduction of Americanisms is diluting their particular language.  So it is nice to see that Britishism are also invading the language ring!

But wait didn’t that already happen? I thought our “Americanisms” have their root in the English Language that we speak!

And – is language and terminology sharing a bad thing?

Alfred North Whitehead discusses in Metaphysics the need for creating new words to describe new concepts.  Those new ideas and concepts often happen via interaction with other cultures, the technologies that they bring, and the terms that use to describe them.  This clarity of communication can lead to us coming up with something entirely new.

So, to you purists, and the rest, instead of remorsing over people using these new words, think how these do not replace words that you are familiar with and have associated memories, but how these new words spice to your language and develop a deeper understanding based on the layers and levels of terms used in their description.

Cheers Y’all!
